In an LNG (liquified natural gas) tank fuel evaporation creates pressure and heat that must be relieved - without releasing NBOG (natural boil-off gas) into the atmosphere That's easy on an LNG carrier, which has room for an Alfa Laval Gas Combustion Unit or simply GCU. But burning BOG in GCU is wasting of energy and money - this BOG can be used in dual-fuel boiler to produce steam onboard. Almost all ships need boilers for producing steam. Since Alfa Laval Aalborg dual-fuel boilers can be fired with unpressurized BOG in free flow, they can take on the additional safety function of BOG management - even during a compression train failure (gas compressors). Using Aalborg boilers in this way complies with the International code for Gas as Fuel IGFF). But it also lets you avoid adding costly and space-consuming equipment. Unlike engines or genets, Aalborg dual-fuel boilers can burn the mixture of inert gas and methane produced during gas freeing and subsequent gassing up. That means vessel can go straight to and from dry dock, rather than visiting an onshore disposal terminal first.

Why manage BOG with Alfa Laval Aalborg dual-fuel boilers?

Possible on any vessel type

• No pressurization required to use BOG

• Simpler vessel design

• Reduced investment cost
